There used to be these people called editors. I don't know what they're up to these days, but If you are one, drop this guy a line - he could use you. Even just removing the "click here" and "in this post" references apparently left over from when this book was a blog would help. While he frequently admits he doesn't know if the terms he is using are actually words, he makes no such accommodation for the word "learnt", which is one of his favorites. Ouch. Aside from torturing the English language, this is only "complete" at the level of the Table of Contents. Mr. Thilakanathan does indeed manage to glide over a lot of topics in this book... without actually touching down on any of them. After reading this, you will know that a bunch of stuff exists, but you won't know what they are or how to use them. This is truly the view from 10.000 feet. There's some value in that, I suppose.
This book is riddled with grammatical errors. The tone is written as though it were a forum post. It's clear that English is not the author's first language and he didn't get anyone to edit or even proof-read it. And on top of all that, the content doesn't even live up to the title. It's not a "complete guide" of anything. All the author does is say what his favorite tools are and then tell the reader to watch YouTube videos to learn more. So you might as well save the time it would have taken you to read this book and just go straight to the videos.
Too many missing steps. Case in point. Page 38. Let's make paint. -- In Node Editor ... Shift+A -> ShadersMissing?.... Info Editor must be in the mode to display Cycles Render, if not, Shaders will not appearpage 39.. "Connect the Diffuse and Glossy BDSF shader.. to the Mix Shader"Missing.. on page 38.. no mention of adding diffuse shader, only adding Glossy BDSF and Mix Shader.. ??Missing.. definition of terms.. no glossary
Very simple, fast, and casually written. I wish there were more details, but this will get a beginner who's never touched a single design program started in a super basic way. Easy to work through. Some of the other reviews seem to be written as though they expected a huge and highly detailed technical document for Blender (a program that is not ordinarily taught in schools, nor is a huge industry standard) in a book that is around 20 dollars. They didn't get that, and they were silly to expect it.The book effectively walks you through a bit of what you need to know to start learning.
This book gave me a basic understanding of Blender's interface, core features and concepts. It bridged my knowledge level from knowing nothing about Blender to a confidence level where I can now use the tutorials and work productively with Blender. I was up, running and begun sculpting after investing 6 hours working through the book. I will further use this book along with a printed copy of the Blender Infographic Map by gludansky.com as a quick reference.
For the very low price I paid for it, its alright. Doesn't get too in depth with anything. I think better learning would be a project from start to finish and this book is just a bunch of individual examples. It doesn't all tie together to something decent. It gave me a very basic understanding of Blender, that's about it.
Enjoyed the format of the book. The e-book version was easily readable, with excellent screen grabs and descriptions of the text.
Danan really explains Blender in a easy to understand way. I enjoy his tutorials as well and also have a few other books he has put together. Great resource I will be using as my BLENDER skills increase. Thanks Danan.
