About the Author
Jeanette Elisabeth Menter is a former newspaper columnist, freelance magazine writer and Christian Lay Counselor. She began her writing career at the age of sixteen. Her interest in codependency is based in her own experiences. Having had to live through a childhood filled with addiction, abuse, ongoing shame as a way of control and more, she knows what readers are dealing with. “I had the very real need to share what I have learned along the way about this dibilitating problem. I present codependency in a whole new light and believe that anyone who commits to what is laid out in this book will see positive changes in their lives.†Born in Munich, Germany, she was raised in Ohio. At the age of twenty-two she bought a one-way train ticket to California to escape a violent relationship. She spent the next 28 years there and had an successful advertising career for over twenty years. Yet inside she was still battling the demons of codependency. In 2007 she received her Bachelor’s Degree (Cum Laude) from Indiana Wesleyan University with a focus on communications. She and her husband, John moved to Las Vegas in 2012 to be nearer to their grown children in California. “It’s amazing how many people still don’t understand codependency, even when it is consuming them and those they love. The need to fix others is always easier than accepting we are codependent and need help.†"You’re Not Crazy-You’re Codependent" is Jeanette Menter’s first book. "Like addiction, once a codependent, always a codependent. The difference is now I control it...it doesn't control me."

I bought this book as a gift, but I will not be able to give it due to the heavy reliance on religion in the content. The product description should have mentioned the religious framework used by the author. If it had, I could have made an informed decision not to buy it.
I don't have time to write a review that sufficiently reflects how much this book has affected me. I have been in and out of therapy for 10+ years (I'm 25) and have clinical depression, but I've ALWAYS felt that there was something else going on other than depression that I didn't have a word for - something that would explain the behavioral/cognitive thoughts, patterns, and behaviors that didn't change with my medication. Codependency is an identity, a way of seeing yourself and in relation to everyone else around you. I have quite literally underlined entire passages, and a few pages. They describe me to a tee. Now that I know I'm not an anomaly - that I'm not just overly judgmental or bitchy - but actually fall into a behavioral category that can be talked about and worked on, I feel human again. I'm working on being more open-minded and kinder, and it's made a huge difference in my life (and I've only had this book for around 6 months). It helped me feel okay, and courageous, in making the decision not to go to law school, when being a future lawyer is all I've allowed myself to be the last few years, and something I had thought about on and off since I was 9. It just wasn't for me, and the pressure was IMMENSE, but strong family support, and this book, actually allowed me to believe that I didn't have to spend my life pleasing all the people in my life - that I am allowed to be happy and do what << I >> want (not that I know what that is, because I haven't allowed myself to think in those terms before). This is the start of my life being about me, and I'm so happy that I'm making these changes now, instead of dying of pressure and suffocation later on. Thank you Jeanette Menter.
This book opened my eyes to why I have become so Co-dependant. I saw much trauma as a young girl from a father who was addicted to drugs, I had an abusive husband at age 16 and my mother died of suicide when I was 31. I'm tired of the person I was and am working hard to finally take care of me instead of carrying the weight of everyone else's problems. Hopefully this will make me a better person, mother and wife.
I have been reading books on codependency and various topics of effects of poor parenting on adults. This by far is the best book on the topic of codependency...far better than Beattie!
I have always known something was not right with me, but could never pinpoint what that something was. Based on past relations with significant others, famil and friends...I just thought I was a depressed control freak. After reading reviews and description of this book, I finally got it. After forty years, I finally understand that I'm not crazy and that my actions are based on thinks I was raised. In no way playing the blame game, it was enlightening to see a pattern in my family structure that dates back even before my time. It's almost like a cycle, and this wonderful book allowed me to see that. That being said, the strategies and confidence I have built up since reading this book has turned me into a more positive person, that wants to live my life and not depend on living through others through control or manipulation even at a subconscious level. It was also peace of mind to know that this is a true disorder...maybe not medically classified, but it is real and it is a cycle/addiction that can be broke. Thanks so much for this eye opener book that has truly changed the way I'm living my life...and my family thanks you as well
This book has been very helpful for me. I've struggled for many years with depression but I appreciate how this book helped me to learn to take the time to really examine myself. Learn to forgive myself and others in order to release myself from my own prison and start allowing myself to enjoy true happiness.
This is the first book I read In my journey to changing my life. I had no idea what codependency was; however i relate to a T! It seriously opened my mind and I'm so excited to continue applying these skills to my life so that I can continue in getting better. Easy read and it flows beautifully. Not one spot did I get bored or think it wouldn't benefit me. People who have gone through a really rough childhood or are having a tough time now, there is absolutely hope! I honestly feel like my heart is opened....? I don't know how to describe it, it's just awesome!
Easy to read and so to the heart of the matter. Written by a recovering codependent to others, she really explains the "dis ease" with clarity. But the best part is how positive she is throughout the book. I have read several books on codependency and while helpful they left me feeling like recovery was going to be a lot of work and take years and years to see much improvement. And although this maybe true this book was very hopeful and made the road ahead seem less daunting. Thank you for this book Elisabeth ! Very impressed with you
