What is the difference between art anatomy and Bridgman's concept of the human machine? The human machine is the body as not only a fixed framework but also as a complex work of art which moves and was designed to move. In over 400 drawings, George B. Bridgman demonstrates the machine through the presentations which made him a gifted lecturer and teacher in his nearly fifty years at the Art Students League in New York and which gave life to drawings by his many students during those years. All skeletal and muscular systems are fully identified, and all are shown in front, back, and side views.The Human Machine begins with the framework of bones. In each section (head, neck, hand, arm, forearm, elbow, trunk, shoulder, back, scapular region, pelvis, hip, thigh, leg, knee, foot, and toe as well as the combinations of the major sections working together), George Bridgman starts with the skeletal components of the system; then he adds the muscles, shows the changes in the muscles as the body moves and, finally, shows the appearance of the bodily section in action. At the title implies, Bridgman, throughout, supplements his anatomical work with comparative drawings of simple machines. Canadian artist George Brandt Bridgman (1865–1943) studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and taught at New York City's Art Students League. I've been a fan of George Bridgman's books ever since I bought Constructive Anatomy, and followed it with the 100 hands book. I found the Human Machine and ordered it because I wanted to see more references in regards to how the body movies. I'm not severely disappointed but I suppose I was expecting a bit more. I was hoping for more full body references which would separate the book from Constructive Anatomy. Unfortunately it didn't deliver.I did find the information in this book highly useful, but I have to agree that the print quality of the illustrations can be frustrating for some people. I am not bothered by it because I want something that is loose and interpretive, but explanatory. The problem with many art books is that they get so detailed in anatomy an artist trying to learn life drawing isn't learning to interpret the information but simply copies it.You need illustrations like this to help your juices flow and act more creatively. If everything is drawn out for you in explicit detail how do you learn to fill in the gaps and experiment? That is why I found Bridgman's books more valuable to me than the super detailed anatomy books. His methods of construction have helped me out greatly in learning to flesh out my figures from stick forms.The other value of this book is it's price. Why waste 30 dollars or more when these books are usually 10 dollars or less? My other book is becoming worn from extreme use, but at least I know I can easily replace the book at a low cost!
Got is as a gift, seemed to like it. Heard nothing but ooohs and aaaahs. But then again, most people don't complain about the gifts they get. That would be rude. Right?
I purchased this item NEW from Amazon. They need to pull the item down. The publisher should have this product recalled. The broken up pixelated images are partially obscured because they literally transferred to print from an ancient computer or telephone facsimile. The material may have been promising but it is absent in this failed printing. How could you allow ANY drawings to misprint. Less than 1/8 of the illustrations printed properly. This is sloppy plate preparation. The images are supposed to be everything! I was shocked. Most of the pages that were supposed to be covered in sketches are literally blank! Page after page is blank with a notation referencing nothing. If you are looking for illustrated examples do not purchase. This was an absolute waste of time and money.
I'll keep this one short, I bought my first Bridman book as a recomendation and it's one o f the best purchases I've done. cant put it down. If you want a condensed view check life drawing by the same author, this here works if you wanna understand the mechanics of the body in a quick way. the printing could be a little better and Id be thrilld to have a hc edition but the ideas in here are priceless for me
This book is clearly the print of a scanned photocopy of a photocopy. Words are unreadable, pictures are just blurs of ink... This is terrible. This book should be taken off the listing!I received it, opened, saw a couple of pages and threw it to the trash. I didn't even bother with a refund...But well... I guess that's what you get when you pay $0.50 for a book...
There are many pages where illustrations should be that are just spattered with dots, making half of this book completely worthless. You're better finding a PDF version online.
To start sorry about my bad english!About this product all i can say is DONT BUY IT! The images a bronken, pixelated and most of them you can't even see it i mean those images are like everything for the book and you CANT SEE THEM!The publisher and printer must pull the item it down because of its really bad quality ,George Bridgman is one hell of an artist but the crappy way this book was published its just not worth it...
